Sermon Audio: Psalm 51

On Sunday morning, we had the first in our short summer sermon series looking at Psalms from the life of King David. In 2 Samuel 11, David commits adultery with Bathsheba, then has her husband killed in the war he should have been fighting himself. He thinks he has gotten away with it, but God was displeased, and sent Nathan the prophet to confront and convict David. Psalm 51 is the Psalm David writes in response: You are my Salvation.

Sermon Catchup - June 2015

With some months, we're able to continue full steam ahead in our latest series. Other months have lots of special events happening, so we're more bitty in our sermons. In June we had both Gift Day and Children's Day, with special sermons for those occasions. For the rest of the month, we've been continuing in 1 Thessalonians, as we think about holiness and hope. Here are the sermons from June (and the start of July) to catch up or listen again:

Sermon Notes: Walking Worthy for The Day (1 Thes 5: 1-11)
The Day of the Lord will be sudden but not surprising - be sober as you wait for your salvation

The Day of the Lord will be sudden... (1-3)
- Like a thief in the night or labour pains - sudden, unexpected
- ‘They’ and ‘them’ - talking about other people

... but not surprising... (4-5)
- You, beloved, not kept in the dark - open secret, not surprised
- Children of light and the day - not of the night / darkness

... so be sober... (6-8)
- Don’t fall asleep - keep awake & sober - you’re in the day, not the night
- Put on the armour - breastplate of faith & love, helmet - hope of salvation

... as you wait for your salvation (9-11)
- The Day will bring salvation (not wrath) - Jesus has already done it!
- Encourage and build up because of our certain future
How does our life show that we belong to the day, with this certain hope?

Sermon Notes: Walking Worthy in Hope (1 Thess 4: 13-18)
Hope-filled grieving, based on Jesus’ work and word, brings us encouragement

Hope-filled grieving... (13)
- The problem: Have the dead missed out on eternal life?
- Paul doesn’t want us to ‘not grieve’ - death brings grieving
- We don’t ‘grieve as others do who have no hope’ - hope-filled grieving

... Based on Jesus’ work and word... (14-17)
- Jesus’ work: Jesus died and rose again - God will bring those who died
- Jesus’ word: Promise of his coming - dead don’t miss out, they rise first
- Joyful reunion - caught up in the clouds together with them and the Lord
- Promise: we will be with the Lord forever

... Brings us encouragement (18)
- Application: encourage one another with these words
- Remember what Jesus has done and said
- Remind one another when times are tough
- Reflect on our own future
