Crosslinks Prayer Meeting
Tuesday night at 8pm in the Church Hall. All welcome as we pray for Crosslinks mission partners around the world.

Sermon Notes: Walking Worthy in Afflictions (1 Thess 2:17 - 3:13)
Christians facing persecution find pain in separation + strength in partnership

The Pain of Separation (2:17-20)
- Orphaned, separated
- Longing, eagerness, wanting - to see you face to face
Q: Do we feel this pain of separation from other Christians?

Timothy’s Mission (3:1-5)
- Timothy sent to: - strengthen and encourage you; - find out about your faith
- Promise of persecutions had been fulfilled - would any be shaken? In vain?
Q: Who can we go to as we bring strength & encouragement?

Timothy’s Report (3:6-10)
- Good news of faith and love - mutual encouragement, joy
- Continued desire to meet up - leads to prayer:
Q What encouragements have we heard from other Christians recently?

The Prayer of Partnership (3:11-13)
1. Bring us together - Father and Jesus to clear the way
2. Increase your love - Lord to do it, modelled on Paul’s love for them
3. Strengthen your hearts in holiness to be blameless
Q: Who can we pray this prayer for?

1 Thessalonians: Walking Worthy...
24th May ... according to the Word (2:9-16)
31st May ...in Afflictions (2:17-3:13)
14th June ... in Holiness (4:1-12)
28th June ... in Hope (4:13-18)
5th July ... for the Day (5:1-11)
12th July ... in Everyday Life (5:12-28)

Sermon Notes: Walking Worthy according to the word (1 Thess 2:9-16)
Having God’s Word we proclaim it and plead for it, while some prevent it.

Having God’s Word... (13)
- Not human words, not manmade philosophy or made up stories
- The very words of God - God speaking to us
- If this is the case, then it must lead us to action:

... we proclaim it... (9)
- Making it easy for people to hear, not burdening the hearer
- Q: How do we put ourselves out so that other people will hear?

...and plead for it (10-12)
- Paul’s fatherlike dealings (just as he was like a mother v7)
- Urging, encouraging, pleading - a worthy life - God has called us
- Q What things are stopping us from living according to God’s call?

... while some prevent it (14-16)
- We might have God’s Word, but not everyone wants to know
- Opponents try to silence the word - displease God, oppose everyone
- They’re opposing God - filling up measure of sin
= Q: What will help us endure suffering for holding & sharing God’s word?
Pray: That we will delight in God’s word, apply it, share it, and hold it - even when it hurts

Sermon Notes: Walking Worthy in Evangelism (1 Thess 2: 1-8)
Sharing the gospel of God needs courage, conviction and compassion

Sharing the gospel of God needs courage (1-2)
- Misunderstanding? Our coming to you was not in vain - results
- Already suffered - tempted to be quiet, anything for an easy life?
- ‘We had courage in our God to declare to you...’
Q: How can we find courage to speak when things go against us?

Sharing the gospel of God needs conviction (3-4)
- Motive? NOT: deceit / impure motives / trickery...
- Approved by God, entrusted - we speak to please God (not people)
Q: Who are we trying to please with our words (or absence of them)?

Sharing the gospel of God needs compassion (5-8)
- Manner? NOT: words of flattery / greed / praise...
- Gentle, like a nursing mother; compassion and care
- Sharing not just the gospel, but our own selves
Q: How do we show that we care for people - and grow our love for them?
Let’s pray that we increase in courage, conviction and compassion

Model Christians have received and believed the word of God

Model Christians...

- v6 Imitators of us and the Lord
- v7 An example to all the believers
... have received the word of God
- Received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit
- In spite of persecution - jealous Jews & city riots; pastor’s criminal record
Q: How do we make sure that we receive the word of God?
... have believed the word of God
- Receiving not enough - need to believe it when we receive it
- Belief seen in change of life v9-10; faith, hope, love v3
- Obvious to all, being talked about by others
Q: What would be different if we really believed God’s word?
How can we encourage one another to receive and believe God’s word?
