Pray for Peace

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9

The Holy Land, the place sanctified by the presence of prophets, poets, and priests, crying out for justice, urging on towards hope, and seeking after peace, has been, and continues to be a place sacred to millions of people around the world. We have watched with horror the appalling violence that has been unleashed over the last few days around this sacred place. We have seen families devastated, communities shattered, and countless lives lost.

We, as followers of Jesus are called in this time to pray.

Pray for the end of hostilities, pray for the protection of the most vulnerable on both sides in Israel and Gaza, and pray for a recommitment to a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. We also pray that God might grant comfort to the afflicted, healing to the broken, strength to the weak, and courage to those in authority to lay down the instruments of violence and destruction and study war no more.

The Holy Scriptures implore us to work together for peace. Here are just a few passages that call for peace, even in the face of war and violence:

Psalm 4

Confident Plea for Deliverance from Enemies

Answer me when I call, O God of my right! You gave me room when I was in distress.

Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.

How long, you people, shall my honour suffer shame?

How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies? Selah

But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.

When you are disturbed, do not sin; ponder it on your beds, and be silent. Selah

Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord.

There are many who say, ‘O that we might see some good! Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!’

You have put gladness in my heart more than when their grain and wine abound.

I will both lie down and sleep in peace; for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.

Psalm 29

The Voice of God in a Great Storm

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendour.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters.

The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.

He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.

The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, ‘Glory!’

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for ever.

May the Lord give strength to his people!

May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Matthew 5

The Beatitudes

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Concerning Retaliation

‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

Love for Enemies

‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.4

James 3

Two Kinds of Wisdom

Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.

Galatians 5

The Fruit of the Spirit

By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.

2 Thessalonians 3

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with all of you.

Let us pray.

I call upon all Christians to join us in praying for peace in the Holy Land and beyond:

Healer of the Nations, from the noise of war and the drumbeat of vengeance, give us undiminished determination to wage peace. Out of brokenness, violence, and destruction let us plant seeds of hope. Out of chaos, confusion, and hatred, build bridges of love. Out of distrust, disunity, and distance, walk together in harmony. Heal our divisions and make us whole; through Christ our Saviour.    Amen

A Prayer from the Archbishop of Jerusalem: Hosam Naoum

O God of all justice and peace we cry out to you in the midst of the pain and trauma of violence and fear which prevails in the Holy Land. Be with those who need you in these days of suffering; we pray for people of all faiths - Jews, Muslims and Christians and for all people of the land. While we pray to you, O Lord, for an end to violence and the establishment of peace, we also call for you to bring justice and equity to the peoples. Guide us into your kingdom where all people are treated with dignity and honour as your children for, to all of us, you are our Heavenly Father. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Father of peace, as war devastates lives in the Middle East at this time, we cry out to you for shelter and protection for those involved. Shine your light of hope into the darkness for those who are afraid.

In your mercy, hear our prayers.

Prince of peace, where your footsteps once fell and the lands around, let your steps to peace be revealed to the leaders, bringing a speedy and Godly end to this war.  Strengthen the hands of those helping and caring for others affected.

In your love, hear our prayers.

Spirit of peace, spread out your wings of comfort covering all those who mourn, Israelis and Palestinians.  Bring healing in your wings for all those who are injured.

In your grace, hear our prayers.

God of Peace, rest in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank we pray.  Let your tender mercy, strong love and amazing grace be the water that soaks the land for all in these days.

In your faithfulness, hear our prayers.

Your Kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

In Jesus’ name, we trust and pray,

Amen.

A Prayer for Peace

In the Holy Land, O Lord, soften the stone hearts of those who preach and practise intolerance and bigotry; as the sun’s setting glow softens the stone walls of your Holy City, Jerusalem.

Lord, the rocky hills, the valleys, the deserts and the sea shores are filled with the echoes of centuries of pain. Lord, bring peace to house and village. Comfort the mothers who fret and those who mourn. Lord, keep strong the twisted old root of the olive tree, and protect the young vine.

Lord of water and stone, of bread and wine, Lord of the resurrection, feed hope, and bring peace to the wracked but beautiful holy land.

FOR THE PEACE OF THE WORLD

Almighty  God,  from  whom  all  thoughts  of  truth  and  peace  proceed; Kindle, we pray thee, in every heart the true love of peace; and guide with thy pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth; that in tranquillity thy kingdom may go forward, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, the Prince of  Peace; Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in  by  our  unhappy  divisions.  Take  away  all  hatred  and  prejudice,  and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly union and concord: that, as there is but one Body, and one Spirit, and one hope of  our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of  us all, so we may henceforth be all of  one heart, and of  one soul, united in one holy bond of  truth and peace, of  faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst say to thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; Regard not our sins, but the faith of  thy Church, and grant it that peace and unity which is agreeable to thy will; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.

A PRAYER OF THE EASTERN CHURCH

Be mindful, O Lord, of thy people present here before thee, and of those who are absent through age, sickness, or infirmity. Care for the infants, guide the young, support the aged, encourage the faint-hearted, collect the scattered, and bring back the wandering to thy fold. Travel with the voyagers, defend the widows, shield the orphans, deliver the captives, heal the  sick.  Succour  all  who  are in  tribulation,  necessity,  or  distress. Remember for good all those that love us, and those that hate us, and those that have desired us, unworthy as we are, to pray for them. And those whom we have forgotten, do thou, O Lord, remember. For thou art the helper of  the helpless, the saviour of  the lost, the refuge of  the wanderer, the healer of  the sick. Thou, who knowest the need of  each one, and hast heard their prayer, grant unto each according to thy merciful loving-kindness, and thy eternal love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FOR RECOLLECTION OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD

O heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being; We humbly pray thee so to guide and govern us by thy Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life we may never forget thee, but remember that we are ever walking in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FOR GUIDANCE

Go before us, Lord, in all our doings with your most gracious favour, and further us with your continual help; that in all our works begun, continued and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name, and finally by your mercy attain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

CONCLUDING PRAYERS

Heavenly Father, you have promised through your Son, Jesus Christ, that when we meet in his name, and pray according to his mind, he will be among us and hear our prayer. In love and wisdom fulfil our desires, and give us your greatest gift, which is to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our needs before we ask, and our ignorance in asking; have compassion on our weakness, and give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and in our blindness we cannot ask; for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 16:33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Back to the BCP!!

Hi folks It’s been a long time since the  pandemic  started and the lockdowns - and Covid hasn’t really gone away! I had the dubious honour of getting Covid for the second time just before Holy Week, giving me the chance to think about ministry direction, both my own and in the parish. One of the original responses to the pandemic was to limit our use of the hymn books and our Prayer Books. At the beginning I produced a service sheet with all the relevant liturgy - which we used in the car park and when we returned to the church. Our “temporary measure” lasted almost three years - and it’s time to move on! Our Book of Common Prayer contains our unique identity - in fact the word “Common” doesn’t mean ordinary but that it shows our unity - the liturgy we hold in “common”. We will be returning to our BCPs from this weekend, the Second Sunday of Easter. We will be using Morning Prayer Two - and we will guide us through the service.  We look forward to seeing you in church or online via Fb
